September, 2006 Summer 2006Summer Interns Shine in Villa CoapaOver the summer, we hosted and mentored 3 missionary interns for 6 weeks through the Let’s Start Talking (LST) program. The Mexico City interns included: Jeff and Kristina Sims (with their baby Noah) both teachers from Longview, Texas; and Lacy Hefley from Russellville, Arkansas, a student at Arkansas Tech University. Usually, LST workers spend 4 to 6 weeks helping people practice their English using the Bible. However, this new LST internship program is for LST workers who are interested in long-term mission work. The Mexico City interns (Jeff, Kristina and Lacy) not only worked with over 25 people in LST reading sessions, but they also took Spanish classes, missions classes, cultural classes and helped invite people and organize a one-day Vacation Bible School type event in Villa Coapa. Sean taught the missions and culture classes. During our culture classes we brought in different people from the church to talk about Mexican culture. We also took them on excursions to Cuernavaca, Teotihuacán, Xochimilco and Historic Downtown Mexico City. The interns did a great job of representing Christ in our area. They built relationships with their LST readers and invited several people to our Thursday night cell group in Villa Coapa. As a result, several people continue to come to our small group and several others are interested in learning more about Jesus.
Family NewsSchool has started well again this year. Sarah is now in the third grade. Her favorite class is science. In science they are learning about insects and, at home, Sarah has been telling us everything she has learned: the symbiotic relationship between ants and aphids or the fact that butterflies have thinner bodies than moths. Philip is now in the first grade and this year he started at the missionary kids’ school. The transition has been smooth for Philip. He has begun to read in English and is doing great. He does not seem to like one class better than another yet, unless we count recess when he can go out and play soccer.
This year, I am teaching Biology to the high school students at the kids’ school. This has been a fun opportunity for me to use what I studied in college (Biochemistry). I am discovering a lot about being a teacher and also understand better the idea that you truly learn a subject when you have to teach it.
The ladies in the church continue getting together about once a month for a ladies’ day. In September, I hosted the reunion at our house. We had a nice morning, visiting and being encouraged by God’s word. We looked at the life of Hannah in 1 Samuel. We focused on the peace she had when she put her faith in God and trusted Him to work in her trials. We then applied that to our own lives, seeking to trust God as He works in our lives. This time together continues to build up the women of the church and encourage them to walk faithfully with God.
Again this year, the Tierra Firme church celebrated Mexico’s Independence Day (September 15) in style. We met at the sports complex where we have worship. We feasted on traditional food: pozole and tamales. The view from sports complex was great. It was a clear evening and, from our third-floor lookout, we could see many of the city’s fireworks displays. We ended the evening with karaoke. Everyone had a great time singing traditional Mexican songs, contemporary Spanish pop and hits from the Beatles! Sean and I soon realized that, although we can converse in English for hours on end without problems, we don’t know the Beatles’ songs even half as well as our Mexican friends. New Births: On Sunday, September 9, 2006 the Tiempo Nuevo congregation experienced 3 new births into Christ. Oscar Hernández Alonso, the son of Alfredo & Norma was baptized in Christ followed by his grandparents, Buena Ventura Alonso Moreno & Sara Bonilla Perez. It was great day of celebration for the Hernández Alonso family and the entire congregation. Prayer Warriors (Ephesians 6:18, 19)· Mondays for Mexico: While the official President Elect, Felipe Calderon Hinojosa, was declared the winner of the July 2 elections, his former opponent has also been declared the President Elect of Mexico by his own political coalition. The new president of Mexico will take office Dec. 1, 2006. Please continue to pray for political peace in Mexico. · Give thanks! Oscar, Buena Ventura & Sara were baptized into Christ during the month of September. Please pray for their growth in Christ. · Please continue to pray for Tupac Alcauter and his discipleship with Christ. Pray for the follow-up on the summer evangelistic events (LST readers, VBS families and those from the Beginning English class). Specifically, pray for Angel, Erwin, Rosaura, Daya and Maggie.
